As young Hrothulf's advisor, Red Horse shares his Machiavellian vision of human society, the state: it exists to serve the purposes of the powerful and will use any means to do so. Red Horse advocates revolution: "The total ruin of institutions and morals is an act of creation." (118) The American anarchist Emma Goldman used this definition ANARCHISM: The philosophy of a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man-made law; the theory that all forms of government rest on violence, and are therefore wrong and harmful, as well as unnecessary. In his paradoxical idea that destruction is creative, Red Horse appears linked to Grendel's own dark impulses - though, it seems, Grendel has no underlying ideology despite the Dragon's efforts to provide one.
