Edgar Lee Masters painted a portrait of American life by imagining the voices of Spoon River Cemetery. After reading his work with some of my classes, I asked them to give voice to someone who has died. This person could be real or imaginary, personally known to the poet or at some distance, a celebrity perhaps.
