o ... the two girls are gone now ... they were practicing the flute part for "rock and roll" ... you know ... that song the marching band does that floats over to my room some friday nights when i'm busy avoiding the home game... well they were playing it real nice ... standing there a long time under the birch tree ... and once one of them shouts "hey!" right at that part of the song where the whole crowd shouts "hey!" ... but now they're gone ... it's a cool gray afternoon anyway

so last saturday i wrote about not submitting any pomes to jmayhew's new poetry venture the duplications ... he found the link and asked me to submit something and i did (a few) and he liked one and posted it ... so there ... it's nice to be liked ... thanks, jonathan

altered books

every year around this time (if i'm teaching sophs) i'm forced to face the many-headed outrage that is our american literature anthology from prentice-hall ... the classic moment when we realize that something has been left out ... as in franklin's autobiography where he lists and describes thirteen virtues ... but in our book we get 13 virtues and only 12 descriptions ... a big gaping hole where his description of chastity used to be ... i guess his definition is at odds with some folks in texas and/or california ... so we don't get to read:

Chastity: Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.

though i imagine my sophs will hear it from someone ... and the moral foundations of the nation will crumble ... no doubt
